Children love this story, the title alone sends them into
uncontrollable fits of laughter. The thing I love most about this book is the
repetition of the words 'but Mama'. Everytime I have read this story to
children they have loved to join in. The rhythm of the book makes it easy to
read and fun for anyone listening. It is simply one of those stories that makes
you say 'aww' when you have finished.
The story begins with a mum and child cuddled up in bed. "I
love you, my wonderful child' says Mama, but the child had some questions they
wanted answered. What if this child was a 'big scary ape', would their mum
still love them? No matter what this beautifully imaginative child thought of,
Mama had an answer, often wacky and weird. It is a story of a mum's
unconditional love, complimented beautifully by the illustrations. Cyd Moore
has managed to draw these scary creatures in a way that you would be willing to
risk life or limb to hug them. All up, it's a fun story to read and the perfect
bedtime story.
