Alphabet Musical Chairs

I shared this game with a friend of mine who was having difficulty teaching the alphabet sounds to her class. This is a game I thought of one day to start or end a literacy block. It is also a great time filler.

Children either sit on the carpet or on chairs in a circle. In front or on each chair is an alphabet card. Children walk around the circle while the music plays and when the music stops they sit on the closest chair. Then go around the circle asking each one to tell you the name or sound of that letter. When children have had more practice you can ask them to say a word that begins or ends with that sound. It can get too much to ask each individual child every round, just make sure every child gets a turn to share. It has worked well with all my classes.
